KAWULI YOUTH EMPOWERMENT NETWORK
In the West African language of Malinke, kawuli means to overcome. Therefore, as responsible educators, parents, and community members we all have a duty to create culturally affirming spaces in which our young people can develop the holistic capacity to overcome. Kawuli Youth Empowerment Network is a national organization whose mission is to cultivate African (i.e., Melanated-Indigenous) youth of high ethical, intellectual, and professional quality.
Sponsored by The Self-Knowledge Academy, LLC, Kawuli operates according to what we refer to as the Empowerment Equation: Strong Mind + Strong Body = Whole Person. This formula reasons that a strong mind thinks critically, holistically, and objectively. Moreover, a strong body (i.e., individual) is one that acts appropriately, decisively, and humanely, Ultimately, the whole person represents self, community, and world in a manner expressing mind/body (i.e., spirit) harmoniousness across space and time.
Kawuli provides students (grades 7-12) with informative and exciting extracurricular experiences that promote the values of unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith; known as the Nguzo Saba or Seven Principles. We are serious practitioners who know well that engaged adults begin as empowered young people. Based upon this awareness, we have developed a sequentially adaptive curriculum in the following areas:
1. Agriculture
2. Cultural Identity
3. Entrepreneurship
4. Interpersonal Communications
5. Physical Fitness & Nutrition
6. Self-Defense
7. Vocational Sustainability
Kawuli affords today's youth the unique opportunity to develop their knowledge, enhance their abilities, and invest in their success in dynamic ways that matter. Our staff, presenters, and volunteers all recognize the urgent need to maintain safe and effective contexts in which our youth can ask questions, refine solutions, and discover answers. In keeping with our mission, Kawuli is providing much-needed leadership by imbuing young people with the capabilities and virtues essential to overcome!
